 Blog #2 - Carbonhydrates and Added Sugar Differences between Foods that are High in Carbohydrates and Foods with Added Sugar You can find the differences when you read the food labels of the respective food prodcts. The first label is the food that is high in carbonhydrates. As you can see in the section of "Carbonhydrates", it showed 34g with 2g of fibre but there is no sugars. In the second label, the one with added sugars also contains  carbonhydrates (26g in this example) but there is also 22g of sugars. From this difference, you can distinguish between these 2 food products. Ultra-processed foods are made from substances found in food, such as fats and starches, and then other ingredients are added - such as artificial flavours and colours, added sugar, stabliziers, preservatives and more (Drummond, 2022). These foods go through multiple processes (extrusion, molding, milling, etc.), contain many added ingredients and are highly manipulated (Heart & Stroke). These foods include soft-drinks, ice-cream, chocolates, sausages, etc. A recent research commissioned by Heart & Stroke found that Canadians consume almost 50% of their daily calories from ultra-processed food.  It showed that we are eating a significant amount of processed food every day.
